I spent the first 40 years of my life somewhere on the spectrum of 'Overweight' to 'Morbidly Obese.' The year I turned 40, at over 100 lbs overweight I fell into the latter category. In 2003 I couldn't run a block if my life depended on it. I took half a day to go 20 miles on a hybrid bike & up to December '06 I couldn't swim the length of a pool.
But in August 2003 the stars aligned & after many failed attempts a visit to the Weight Watchers website started me down a path of health and fitness for the first time in my life.
As fate would have it, my life did depend on my being able to run a city block, 5 miles of 'em actually. In November '05, after running the local Turkey Trot a symptom revealed a malignant tumor in my left kidney. With a healthy right kidney, removing it was my only option and proved to be my cure. I was very fortunate and so thankful for the turns my life has taken. I'm grateful for the second chances I've been given and intend to make the most of them.
In the fall of 2007 I was selected by the Cadence Kona Challenge to be trained to do an Ironman in 2008, I did two of them for good measure. A few more marathons in 2009 - now it's on to the next thing
